5 Tips to Take Away From Oral Health Month

As Oral Health Month officially comes to a close later this week, we wanted to round up some of the important tips we have shared over the past month! Our hope is that when you read this, you continue to keep up with these habits throughout the year- April may be the month to celebrate and bring awareness to Oral Health, but it’s something that should be a focus every day of the year!

  1. Brush twice a day AND floss every day!

  2. Make healthy food choices. Limit foods that are high in sugar or are very acidic.

  3. Avoid tobacco. Smoking or chewing tobacco can lead to mouth cancers, gum disease and tooth loss.

  4. Regularly examine your mouth for signs of gum disease and oral cancer. This could look like sores or spots, numbness inside the mouth or difficulty chewing or swallowing.

  5. Don’t wait until you need emergency dental care to consult a dental professional. It only takes a few minutes to make an appointment- and your health is a priority!

It’s common for people to ignore the symptoms of poor oral health, but if left unaddressed, these problems can end up reducing your quality of life- physically, mentally and socially. The reality is, oral health problems can be a sign of something more serious, like oral cancer. With early detection, the survival rate can be greatly improved and we can prevent more serious problems from arising in the future!

Last year, Baseline Village Dental Hygiene patient Brian opened up about his journey with oral cancer. Listen to his story below!
